Library Services to support children and families
We would like to tell you about some of the services on offer in Surrey’s libraries to help you and the families using your Centre.
Firstly, libraries are completely free and very easy to join. Customers just need to bring evidence of their current address eg a utility bill. Items borrowed on a child’s own library card do not incur any overdue or reservation charges. It’s easy to renew books either in the library or online and the books can be borrowed from or returned to any Surrey library.
Children can have their own library card from birth onwards and the under 5s can take part in Pebble’s Reading Adventure, a simple book borrowing incentive scheme with a lovely reward for the child. Older children can take part in the annual Summer Reading Challenge, reading 6 library books to earn rewards over the summer holidays.
Every library has a dedicated children’s area with a wide range of stock including board and picture books, easy readers, fiction and non-fiction as well as DVDs, for which hire charges apply.
Libraries offer regular Rhymetimes open to all, although some sessions need to be pre-booked because of their popularity. Check the website for details.
Many libraries also have a regular Storytime session choosing both familiar and new stories to read to small children. Times and locations can be found here.
Services for parents and carers
We have books for parents, carers and children which can help support families facing difficult situations eg divorce and separation, grief and bereavement, starting school, moving house, adoption or fostering etc.
Of course, there is also a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books available for adults and teens to borrow as well as audio books and DVDs. In addition, when they are a library member customers will be able to access our range of eBooks and eAudio, picking a good book to read or listen to without having to leave home!
For customers who have difficulty getting to the library because of ill health, disability, mobility problems or caring responsibilities we are able to offer several options. A call to our Library Information Service on 01483 543599 will establish eligibility and the most suitable option.
For printed copies of our Library Services for the under 5s leaflets, Pebble’s Reading Adventure posters or any further information on our services and how we can help you, please email email@example.com or telephone Community Connections on 01483 541518.
